Making Authentic Greek Gyros at Home

If you are here, then you are certainly Greek or at least a Greek enthusiast. There is much to like about Greece and the Greek culture, and that can even include the food.

Perhaps the most well-known Greek culinary creation is gyros, which is a type of sandwich. Many Greek restaurants make or break with their gyros - if they make good gyros, they will probably be able to stay in business. and if you are a huge fan of gyros, you know the best places in town to get one.

But who's to say you have to go somewhere for a good gyro? Why not try your hand at making one at home? Here is what you need for quality gyros - you can find recipes for this just about anywhere:

The meat - beef loin, lamb loin or chicken breast will work.

Olive oil, yogurt, juice from a lemon.

The veggies - cucumbers, red onion, lettuce and tomato.

Pita bread - with or without pockets.

Season the meat with olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and grill the meat for about 2 minutes per side.

Brush the bread with olive oil and grill that for 2 minutes per side.

Combine lemon juice, yogurt and cucumbers in a separate bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then spread the mixture into each of the breads.

Divide the meat evenly among the breads you have and stuff them in the breads, then add the lettuce, onions and tomatoes as you prefer. Voila!
